EIC Pathfinder 2026: Deadlines, 3 Challenges & 7 Steps
The only EIC Pathfinder 2026 call you can still apply to is Pathfinder Challenges. It closes on at 17:00 Brussels time and has €96 million to share across three topics (EIC Pathfinder page, Euresearch). Pathfinder Open 2026 closed on , and its 43 winners were announced on (EIC news). Neither 2026 Pathfinder call uses a "short proposal first, full proposal later" process. That two-step flow belongs to the EIC Accelerator, and it is only proposed for Pathfinder Open from 2027 (KoWi).
Which option is right for you?
Your best route depends on whether you already have a finished proposal on one of the three Challenge topics. Everyone else should get ready for the 2027 cycle.
| Your situation (as of ) | What to pick first | First page to open |
|---|---|---|
| Your proposal fits one of the three 2026 Challenge topics and is almost done | Submit to Pathfinder Challenges before 28 Oct, 17:00 CET | Challenges topic page on the Funding & Tenders Portal |
| You're a beginner with an early-stage (TRL 1–4) idea and no proposal yet | Skip 2026. Prepare for the 2027 Pathfinder Open stage-1 short proposal (draft date ) | EIC Pathfinder overview |
| You submitted to Pathfinder Open 2026 and weren't selected | Read your Evaluation Summary Report, then plan a 2027 resubmission | Funding & Tenders Portal → My Area → My Proposals |
| You're a company with a prototype (TRL 6–8) that's heading to market | EIC Accelerator, not Pathfinder | EIC Accelerator page |
| You're a consultant or grants office handling several clients | Check each client's TRL and team shape against the table in the Open vs Challenges section | EIC Work Programme 2026 (PDF) |
| You have a small budget and no consortium | Pathfinder Challenges is the only Pathfinder strand that accepts a single applicant | Euresearch Pathfinder summary |
If you don't have a PIC (Participant Identification Code) yet, read EU Funding and Tenders Portal Registration: PIC in 6 Steps first. You can't submit without one.
EIC Pathfinder 2026 Call: What's Open Right Now?
Right now, only Pathfinder Challenges 2026 is open, until . Pathfinder Open 2026 has closed and its results are out. Both run under the EIC Work Programme 2026 (Commission Decision C(2026) 4080). Each is a separate call with its own identifier, budget and deadline, and you can't move a proposal from one to the other.
| Sub-call | Call identifier | Opened | Deadline | Budget | Status (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pathfinder Open | HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDEROPEN-01 | , 17:00 | €166M | Closed; 43 projects selected | |
| Pathfinder Challenges | HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01 | , 17:00 | €96M | Open |

Some search results and older blog posts cause confusion:
- One consultancy article gives as the Challenges deadline (Accelopment). That was the opening date. The EIC and national contact points give 28 October as the deadline.
- Many pages list a run of 2026 dates: 7 January, 4 March, 6 May, 8 July, 2 September and 4 November. Those are EIC Accelerator full-proposal cut-offs (EIC Accelerator page), not Pathfinder dates. Pathfinder has one deadline per sub-call per year.
- The EIC also runs Pathfinder Booster grants, a fixed amount of up to €50,000 for exploring commercialisation (EIC Pathfinder page). You can't apply for these directly. They're for teams that already hold a Pathfinder grant.
EIC Pathfinder Open vs Pathfinder Challenges: What's the Difference?
Pathfinder Open takes bottom-up ideas in any field. Pathfinder Challenges funds work only on topics the Commission defines in advance. The two also differ on team rules, page limits and how proposals are selected.
| Pathfinder Open 2026 | Pathfinder Challenges 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| Topic | Any science-to-technology breakthrough | 3 fixed topics (see below) |
| Minimum team | 3 independent legal entities from 3 different Member States/Associated Countries, at least one in an EU Member State | Single legal entity allowed (not mid-caps or large companies), or consortia of 2+ |
| Part B page limit (sections 1–3) | 22 pages | 30 pages |
| Indicative grant | Up to €4M | Up to €4M (€500k–€4M range quoted) |
| Selection | Ranked on scores | Scores, then portfolio balancing by the Evaluation Committee |
| Extra obligation | — | A portfolio work package of at least 10 person-months |
| Funding model | Lump sum, 100% of eligible costs | Lump sum, 100% of eligible costs |
Sources: EU-Büro des BMFTR, EIC Pathfinder page, TPM Science, euacc.ai, as of October 2026.
Both strands are aimed at TRL 1–4, meaning early-stage work up to proof of concept (EIC Pathfinder page). Both also use the same award criteria and weights: Excellence 50% (threshold 4/5), Impact 30% (threshold 3.5/5), and Quality and efficiency of implementation 20% (threshold 3/5) (TPM Science). The Excellence threshold is high. A proposal that scores 3.5 there fails, however strong its impact section is. Our Horizon Europe Part B scoring map shows how to map each section to these criteria.
The portfolio step changes how Challenges proposals are written. After the remote scoring, the Evaluation Committee sorts proposals into categories and chooses "a balanced portfolio of diverse and complementary proposals" (TPM Science). For the DeepRAP topic, for example, the call text lists three dimensions: cognitive function (reasoning, abstraction, planning), technological approach (neuro-symbolic AI, deep learning, reinforcement learning and others) and use case (industry, health, cybersecurity and more) (euacc.ai). If your proposal is the fifth one on the same approach and use case, it can lose out to a lower-scoring proposal that fills a gap. State clearly which slot you fill.
Pick Open if you have three or more partners in different countries and an idea that doesn't fit a Challenge topic. Pick Challenges if your idea matches a topic, you are a single university lab or small firm, or you want the 30-page limit. Challenges suits you less if you dislike shared portfolio work, because the 10 person-months for portfolio activities come out of your project effort.
EIC Pathfinder 2026 Deadline: When Do I Need to Submit?
You need to submit to Pathfinder Challenges by , 17:00 Brussels time. The Pathfinder Open 2026 deadline () has passed. Each 2026 call had a single deadline for a full proposal. There were no short-proposal and full-proposal cut-offs (EU-Büro des BMFTR, euacc.ai).
If you're submitting to Challenges this week, use this sequence:
- Log in to the Funding & Tenders Portal with your EU Login. Set up two-factor authentication in advance if you haven't done so (our 2FA guide).
- Open the topic page for your challenge (HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-01, -01-02 or -01-03).
- Scroll to the Submission service section and click Start submission. Enter the coordinator's PIC and a short title.
- Fill in Part A online: participants, contacts and the budget table. Follow the budget structure the submission form asks for, and check it against the Lump Sum Model Grant Agreement listed on the topic page.
- Upload Part B as a PDF. Sections 1–3 must not exceed 30 pages. Check the standard application form on the topic page for how over-length proposals are handled.
- Click Validate, fix any blocking errors, then click Submit.
- Check that the proposal status in My Proposals reads "Submitted" and that you received the confirmation email.
Common mistakes and fixes:
- Submitting at 16:55. A last-minute upload leaves no time to fix validation errors or login problems. Submit a complete draft a day early, and check the Portal's guidance on replacing a submitted version before the deadline.
- Wrong time zone. 17:00 Brussels is 16:00 in London and Lisbon, and 11:00 in New York at the end of October.
- The coordinator's PIC isn't validated yet. Submission still works with a registered PIC, but tell the Validation Services early. Our PIC registration guide covers this.
How Does the EIC Pathfinder Open 2026 Deadline Work (Short vs Full Proposal)?
For Pathfinder Open 2026 there was no short proposal. Applicants submitted one full proposal by , and the call received 2,103 proposals (Accelopment, Navarrabiomed). The short-then-full model is what changes in 2027, and it is still a draft.
According to the draft EIC Work Programme 2027 as reported in August 2026 (KoWi, evolution-europe, euacc.ai):
| Stage (draft 2027) | What you submit | Draft date | Evaluated on |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stage 1 | Short proposal, max 8 pages, plus commitment letters from all partners | Excellence and Impact only | |
| Stage 2 (invited only) | Full proposal, max 23 pages | All three criteria | |
| Interview | Pitch of up to 10 minutes | ~10–14 weeks after stage 2 | — |
The draft has no fixed score threshold at stage 1. The EIC ranks proposals and invites enough to stage 2 to cover about 2.5 times the available budget (KoWi). The draft budget stays at €166 million (Accelopment).
What this means for you:
- The 2027 clock starts in February, not May. That leaves about four months after the Work Programme is adopted (expected in early November 2026, per the EIC).
- Get partner commitment letters early. A consortium you put together in the last week won't meet a stage-1 requirement for signed letters.
- You can't skip stage 1. Only invited applicants can submit at stage 2. If you miss , you would wait for the 2028 cycle.
- Don't plan around draft dates as if they were final. Both KoWi and the EIC say the details can change before adoption. Check the final Work Programme PDF once it's published.
What Are the EIC Pathfinder 2026 Challenges (Topics)?
The 2026 Pathfinder Challenges are three topics, each with about €32 million: miniaturised energy harvesting materials, biotechnology for healthy ageing, and trustworthy cognitive AI (TPM Science, Zabala).
| Topic code | Challenge | Indicative budget | Each topic has its own Challenge Guide? |
|---|---|---|---|
| HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-01 | Advanced Materials for Miniaturised Energy Harvesting Systems | €32M | Yes |
| HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-02 | Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing | €32M | Yes |
| HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01-03 | DeepRAP: Deep Reasoning, Abstraction & Planning towards trustworthy Cognitive AI Systems | €32M | Yes |
Sources: Microfluidics Innovation Center call list, euacc.ai, as of October 2026.
With a typical grant of €4 million, €32 million per topic works out to about eight projects. The DeepRAP call page gives the same figure (euacc.ai). Competition was tough in earlier years too. In 2025 the Challenges success rate was 4.5%, and demand was 19.2 times the available budget (Zabala).
Each topic has its own Challenge Guide, written by the EIC Programme Manager in charge. It sets out the specific objectives and the portfolio categories. Read it before you read the generic Work Programme text. A proposal that is excellent but doesn't connect to the Guide's objectives is likely to lose points on Excellence.
The 2027 Challenge topics will be different. The draft 2027 Work Programme contains three new draft Challenges (KoWi), so don't assume the 2026 topics will come back.
What Is the EIC Pathfinder 2026 Budget?
The EIC Pathfinder 2026 budget is €262 million: €166 million for Open and €96 million for Challenges. Grants are usually up to €4 million per project, and more is possible if it is "duly justified" (EIC Pathfinder page, Zabala).
| Item | Figure | Source (as of Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Total Pathfinder 2026 | €262M | Zabala |
| Pathfinder Open | €166M | EIC |
| Pathfinder Challenges | €96M (€32M × 3) | TPM Science |
| Grant per project | Up to €4M, more if justified | EIC |
| Funding rate | 100% of eligible costs, lump sum | TPM Science |
| Booster grant (grantees only) | Fixed amount up to €50,000 | EIC |
| Pre-financing | 40–60%, within 30 days of signature | euacc.ai |
Because the grant is a lump sum, read the Lump Sum Model Grant Agreement on your topic page to see how payments are linked to the work you deliver. Your budget table still needs realistic costs per work package, since evaluators check whether the resources match the work. Asking for more than €4 million is allowed, but every extra euro has to be justified in the Quality and efficiency section, which carries only 20% of the score.
How to Find the EIC Pathfinder 2026 Template and Submission Documents?
The official templates are on each topic page of the Funding & Tenders Portal, under Topic conditions and documents. The general EIC website doesn't host the proposal forms (euacc.ai).
- Go to the Funding & Tenders Portal → Search funding & tenders → Calls for proposals.
- Type the call identifier, for example
HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01, into the search box. Set the status filter to Open for submission. - Click your topic (-01-01, -01-02 or -01-03).
- Open Topic conditions and documents and download:
- the EIC Work Programme 2026,
- the Challenge Guide for your topic,
- the standard application form (HE EIC Pathfinder Challenges), which is the Part B template,
- the standard evaluation form, which shows what evaluators score,
- the Lump Sum Model Grant Agreement.
- Check Topic updates on the same page for corrections or FAQ changes published after the call opened.
- To see the Word Part B template inside your draft, click Start submission and download it from the submission system. The version there is always the current one.
Common mistakes and fixes:
- Using a 2024 or 2025 template. Page limits and sections change. Open used 22 pages in 2026, and the 2027 draft proposes 23 for stage 2 (euacc.ai). Download a fresh copy from this year's topic page.
- Using the Open template for Challenges. They have different page limits (22 vs 30). The Challenges template also expects the portfolio work package.
- Removing the template instructions but keeping the headings out of order. Evaluators score against the evaluation form headings, so keep the template's numbering.
EIC Pathfinder 2026 Timeline: From Submission to Grant Agreement
Expect results about 5 months after the deadline and a signed grant agreement about 8 months after it (TPM Science, euacc.ai). The 2026 Open call fits this pattern: deadline 12 May, results 14 October (EIC news).
For Pathfinder Challenges 2026, the EIC describes a two-step evaluation without an interview (TPM Science):
- Remote evaluation. At least three independent EIC expert evaluators score your proposal against the three criteria.
- Evaluation Committee. The committee, which includes EIC Programme Managers, builds the portfolio and may recommend small changes to strengthen links between projects.
- Information letter. Under the 5-month rule, this would come around late March 2027. This date is an example calculated from the rule, not an announced date.
- Grant agreement preparation. You finalise data, the budget and portfolio commitments in the Portal.
- Signature. Using the 8-month rule as an example, this would be around late June 2027. Pre-financing follows within about 30 days.
For a project you submit on , this means work probably won't start before mid-2027. If you need bridge funding, apply for it separately. A Pathfinder grant won't fill a gap in early 2027.
EIC Pathfinder 2026 Results: Where to Check if You Were Selected?
Your own result comes to your EU Login account in the Funding & Tenders Portal, under My Area → My Proposals. The EIC publishes overall results, such as the 43 Pathfinder Open 2026 projects, on its news pages.
To check yours:
- Log in to the Portal and open My Area → My Proposals.
- Find your proposal and look at the status column. Our My Proposals status table guide explains each status.
- Open the evaluation result letter and the Evaluation Summary Report (ESR), which has the scores and comments for each criterion.
- If you were selected, watch for the grant agreement preparation invitation and the deadlines for responding.
- If you weren't, compare your scores against the thresholds (4 / 3.5 / 3). The ESR may also say if evaluators advise against resubmitting (euacc.ai).
Here are the published Pathfinder Open 2026 figures, so you can see where you stand. The EIC selected 43 projects involving 218 organisations from 30 countries. Of 266 participations, 44% were higher education institutions, 28% research organisations and 25% private companies, and 34 of the 43 projects include an SME (EIC news). From 2,103 submissions, that is a success rate of about 2% (Accelopment). A score just below the thresholds is common, and it doesn't mean the idea is bad.
EIC Pathfinder vs EIC Accelerator 2026: Which Call Should I Apply To?
Choose Pathfinder for research at TRL 1–4 that is heading toward a proof of concept. Choose the Accelerator if your company is at TRL 6–8 and is scaling toward the market. The two calls have different deadlines, templates and applicants (EIC Pathfinder, EIC Accelerator).
| EIC Pathfinder 2026 | EIC Accelerator 2026 | |
|---|---|---|
| TRL | 1–4 | 6–8 |
| Who applies | Consortia (Open), or single entities or consortia (Challenges) | Single startups/SMEs (some others in specific cases) |
| Money | Grant up to €4M, 100% lump sum | Grant up to €2.5M plus €1M–€10M equity/quasi-equity |
| Process in 2026 | Single-stage full proposal | Short proposal (12-page form, 10-slide deck, 3-min video) → full proposal → interview |
| 2026 dates | Open 12 May; Challenges 28 Oct | Short proposals batched first Tuesday monthly; full cut-offs 7 Jan, 4 Mar, 6 May, 8 Jul, 2 Sep, 4 Nov |
Sources: EIC official pages above, as of October 2026.
Pitfalls:
- "Short proposal" searches often lead to Accelerator rules. If a page tells you to send a short proposal before a Pathfinder deadline, it either describes the Accelerator or the draft 2027 Pathfinder Open process.
- The Accelerator cut-off is only open to companies whose short proposal already received a GO (EIC Accelerator). Our EIC Accelerator deadlines guide covers that timeline.
- Applying too early for the Accelerator. If you have no prototype and no validation outside the lab, Pathfinder (or Transition, once you have Pathfinder results) is the better fit.
If neither fits your stage, our overview of EU funding for SMEs: 7 open 2026 calls lists other options.
Next steps
What you should do next depends on whether you're submitting this week or preparing for 2027.
Things you can do today:
- If you're submitting to Challenges, upload a complete draft today, validate it, and plan the final submission for 27 October, a day before the deadline.
- If you're preparing for 2027, write a one-page summary of your idea against the Excellence and Impact criteria only. Under the draft, stage 1 judges only those two. Then list the partners whose commitment letters you'll need by February.
- If you applied to Open 2026 and weren't selected, download your ESR from My Proposals and mark every comment below 4/5 on Excellence.
If you'd rather not do it yourself:
- National Contact Points (NCPs) for the EIC are free, government-funded advisers in each Member State and Associated Country. Examples are the EU-Büro des BMFTR in Germany and Euresearch in Switzerland (as of October 2026; check the official page). NCPs are good for eligibility questions and proposal checks. They won't write the proposal for you, and they get very busy just before deadlines.
- University research offices often review Pathfinder drafts for their own staff. Ask your office what support it offers and on what terms. This doesn't help startups without an academic partner.
- Private grant consultancies will write or co-write proposals. Fees and fee structures vary a lot, so ask for a written quote. This option suits teams short on time and with a clear idea. It suits you less if the science still needs to be shaped by the researchers themselves. Evaluators score scientific vision most heavily, and nobody can outsource that.
